JULY 20 I MUSICAL INNOVATIONS I EVENT
Musical Innovations Goes to Camp
Musical Innovations in Greenville, S.C., held its Start Right! String Camp from June 14–18. All Greenville County students who had registered for beginning strings class in the fall were invited to the weeklong camp, which gave them a head start in their strings education.
Campers worked with Musical Innovations staff and private instructors. Dan Turner, band director and chairman of the Department of Music Education at Bob Jones University, served as camp coordinator and symphony conductor.
During the event, instructors demonstrated all four orchestral instruments and conducted fittings for the correct-sized instrument. Students received a free Musical Innovations T-shirt and coupons for use toward their instruments and supplies for fall. The camp concluded with a small recital that was presented for the students’ families.
“All week long, we emphasized to both campers and parents the benefits of school music and the positive effect studying music will have on many facets of a child’s education,” said Tracy Leenman, owner of Musical Innovations. “String programs in Greenville County are being threatened by personnel and budget cuts, so the local teachers greatly appreciate our support.”
Almost one-third of the campers continued renting right after camp and began taking lessons in the store’s studios.
Musical Innovations plans on holding a Start Right! Band Camp next summer.
