JULY 28 I BEST BUY I EXPANSION Best Buy executives have announced plans to open as many as 85 in-store music instrument outlets nationwide before the end of the year. According to a July 28 Associated Press report, the company could even add more locations in the future. Each site will be roughly 2,500 square feet. When the roll-out is complete, the consumer electronics giant will become the second largest musical instrument retailer in the United States based on locations — after Guitar Center. Currently, 10 Best Buy music stores are open. This includes five in California, two in Illinois and two in Minnesota. Some analysts have made cautious predictions about the expansion, especially in light of the slow economy. “It’s not a high-profit area, and it’s obviously going to take up a lot of real estate,” said Brady Lemos, a Morningstar retail analyst.
