Schimmel Holds 2nd International Piano Competition

The Second Place Winner Tsuzumi Namikawa of Japan.

The final rounds of the 2nd International Piano Competition took place at the Schimmel Concert Hall in Braunschweig, Germany, from Sept. 23–25. In total, 24 pianists ages 18–32 from more than 10 countries qualified for the finals in the preliminary round, of which 22 young pianists participated in two public competition rounds. The five-member jury consisted of Wolfgang Zill (jury chairman), Markus Becker, Yuka Imamine, Tim Ovens and Milana Chernyavska. The judges assessed the players on their pianistic-artistic performance, as well as a corresponding program concept.

In the end, the winners were: Johannes Obermeier of Germany, who received in 1st prize; Tsuzumi Namikaw of Japan, who received in 2nd prize; and Lorenzo Mazzola of Italy who received 3rd prize.

All three prize-winners presented a selection from their competition entries in the final prize-winners’ concert on the final evening. In the end, the audience voted for their favorite among the prize winners and decided that the audience prize, including a trophy, went to this year’s winner Johannes Obermeier.

Due to the popularity of the competition and the new competition concept, Schimmel said that Wilhelm Schimmel Pianofortefabrik GmbH plans to hold this competition on a regular basis.
