MARCH 28 I OBITUARY I ROBERT ZILDJIAN
Sabian Founder Robert Zildjian Passes Away
Robert "Bob" Zildjian, founder of Sabian, passed away this morning at his home in Brunswick, Maine, after a long battle with cancer. He was 89.
In the 1920s, Bob's father, Avedis, founded the Avedis Zildjian Company. Bob worked alongside his father and brother, Armand, and was influential in many company milestones including finalizing the 1960 purchase of the K. Zildjian Company in Istanbul, Turkey. He worked at his father's company until his father's death in 1979.
In 1981, Bob founded Sabian and secured Zildjian's Canadian factory. Thanks to already established relationships with drum distributors and a growing endorser list, Sabian eased into the U.S. market.
Bob continued to play an active role in the company until his death.
"Bob Zildjian took us all on a trip that we would never have realized — many of us never even realized what we were good at in life, until Bob took us and found it in us," said Nort Hargrove, Sabian's vice president of manufacturing.
Bob is survived by his wife, Willi, and three children: Bill, Sally and Andy, along with eight grandchildren.
